Where 24 Hour Wallpaper is the better choice
Worth saying plainly, because on several counts it is:
- It's real photography. Every location was actually shot there. If what you want on your desktop is a photograph of a place rather than a rendering of it, that is not a small thing, and Chronoscape does not offer it.
- The library is far bigger. Over a hundred locations against our handful. If you want variety today, they have it.
- You can buy it outright. Individual wallpapers or a lifetime bundle — no subscription required, which some people rightly insist on.
- It exists. You can install it in the next two minutes. We can't claim that yet.
Where Chronoscape differs
The weather is the point
A time-of-day wallpaper knows what hour it is. It doesn't know that it's pouring outside your window. Chronoscape reads the current conditions for your location and picks the matching version of the scene, so a grey drizzly Tuesday looks like one on your desktop too. When the sky clears, the wallpaper clears with it.
One place, twenty versions
Each Chronoscape scene is rendered in every combination of light and weather — not just the moments a photographer happened to catch. That's the trade we've made: rendering instead of photography, in exchange for a place you can see in fog at dawn and in snow at dusk.
It runs on macOS 14
24 Hour Wallpaper's current version needs macOS 15. If your Mac is on Sonoma and you'd rather not upgrade yet, Chronoscape will install.

Pick 24 Hour Wallpaper if you want photography, a large library, a one-time purchase, and something working today.
Wait for Chronoscape if the appeal is a desktop that quietly matches the world outside — the hour and the weather — and you'd rather have a few places rendered thoroughly than many captured once.

- Weather. Both change the wallpaper as the day passes and both follow the sun times for your location. Chronoscape also reads the current weather and switches to the matching version of the scene, so the desktop shows rain when it is raining and fog when it is foggy. 24 Hour Wallpaper follows the clock and the sun only.
- Is Chronoscape cheaper than 24 Hour Wallpaper?
- Chronoscape has not announced pricing yet, so we will not claim to be cheaper. 24 Hour Wallpaper is free to install with eight wallpapers included, sells individual wallpapers at about $1.49, and offers Lifetime Access bundles at $29.99 and $69.99. It is also available through a Setapp subscription.

- No. 24 Hour Wallpaper uses photography shot on location, which is a real strength if photographic authenticity matters to you. Chronoscape's scenes are rendered, which is what makes it practical to show the same place in every combination of light and weather rather than only the ones a photographer could capture.
- Can I run Chronoscape on an older version of macOS?
- Chronoscape runs on macOS 14 and later. 24 Hour Wallpaper version 7 requires macOS 15 or later, so on a Mac still running macOS 14 Chronoscape is the one that will install.
